MapMagic - GeoCoding Digital Picture Of Britain
HOME National DEMO Lake District DEMO Southeast DEMO BBC Clone
How does this work? Using the description and title text for each image. My software identifies likely placenames and finds world coordinates for each place. It selects the most likely place, taking into account various contextual and coherency factors. System comprises around 7000 lines of Java which took around six weeks to develop.

Losses Around 16% of the photos don't even mention a place name or misspell it and cannot be located.
A further 3% are lost when my program fails to identify the placename or the place is unknown.

Accuracy At the moment about 62% of the collection are plotted correctly. About 17% are plotted in the wrong place. I expect to be able to improve this significantly.

Scoring The program calculates a 'confidence' score which indicates the degree of certainty with which each photo has been located. Currently about a third of the photos plotted score enough to completely eliminate errors.

Presentation I am using a mix of PHP, JavaScript and HTML to show the demo maps and provide the simplest level of interaction.

Numbers 21104 photos analysed from Picture of Britain rural, human and urban. Estimates as follows. 13046 plotted correctly. 3645 plotted wrongly. 3357 cannot be plotted because they don't mention a name or misspell. 1056 cannot be plotted because the name is unknown. 5725 are plotted with absolute certainty. These estimates are extrapolated from analysis of a random sample of 220 photos.
